Having wriggled their way out from beneath their father's domineering thumb, they are now firmly cocooned in their own complicated lives. Wendy is a struggling East Village playwright, AKA a temp who spends her days applying for grants, stealing office supplies and dating her very married neighbor. Jon is a neurotic college professor writing books on obscure subjects in Buffalo. Then comes the call that informs them that the father they have long feared and avoided, Lenny Savage, is slowly being consumed by dementia and they are the only ones that can help. Now, as they put their already arrested lives on hold, Wendy and Jon are forced to live together under one roof for the first time since childhood, rediscovering the eccentricities that drove each other crazy. Faced with complete upheaval and battling over how to handle their father's final days, they are confronted with what adulthood, family and, most surprisingly, each other are really about.

GOD GREW TIRED OF USSunday, Dec. 9 @ 2 PM; Olympus VIP
90 Minutes, USA, 2006

GOD GREW TIRED OF USDirector: Christopher Quinn

In the late 1980s, 27,000 Sudanese "lost boys"–some just toddlers–marched barefoot over thousands of miles of barren desert, seeking safe haven from the brutal civil war raging in their homeland. Half died from bombing raids and starvation; the others reside together in Kenya's Kakuna refugee camp, with few prospects. Recently, the U.S. invited some of the boys to settle in America. The culture shock begins when the three boys experience the airplane loudspeakers and processed food and continues as they orient themselves to refrigerators, running water, and fluorescent-lit supermarkets. For the first time, they find themselves well fed, yet painfully isolated from the brotherly fellowship that once enabled their survival. They face hints of racism and are perplexed by Americans' obsessive need for privacy and anxious about loved ones struggling in Africa. Yet John, Daniel, and Panther–each radiantly charismatic and thoughtful–meet their challenges, fueled by a desire to help others. Though they were bred in unspeakably dehumanizing circumstances, their integrity and honor are impeccable, raising profound questions about the conditions necessary to create a civilized society

NEVER ON A SUNDAY • Sunday, Dec. 9 @ 4 PM; Olympus VIP
125 Minutes, Mexico, 2007
www.morirseendomingo.com

Director: Daniel Gruener
Producers: Monica Lozano, Daniel Gruener
Writer: Antonio Armonia
Cinematographer: Guillermo Granillo Gonzalez
Cast: Rosa Maria Bianchi, Raul Mendez, Jose Angel Bichir, Mayahuel Del Monte

“Never die in Mexico on a Sunday” is the lesson learned from this fastpaced black comedy based on actual events in screenwriter Antonio Armonia’s life. Dealing with the dreadful fate of a favourite uncle, Never on a Sunday exposes the day-to-day corruption that is rampant in Mexico City through bizarre and hilarious situations. Body-snatching, faking the death of a leading politician, and sex in a coffin are just a part of the dark chain of events which leads to the second moral of this hugely entertaining film – if you are responsible for human remains, it’s not a bad idea to follow them all the way to the grave. Never on a Sunday gleefully confirms André Breton’s view that, “Mexico, with its splendid funeral toys, affirms itself as the chosen land of black humour.”

Assaf, a shy, awkward seventeen year old, is yanked from his mundane summer job and given an impossible task: to track down the owner of a lost Labrador found wandering the city streets. As he follows the dog on its circuitous rounds, Assaf begins to piece together the incredible story behind the owner’s disappearance, a story that captures his imagination and draws him in: the story of a girl named Tamar. One month earlier, Tamar, a gifted musician, embarks with her dog on a desperate quest into Jerusalem’s seamy underworld, and becomes ensnared in its dark clutches. Assaf, smitten by the mysterious girl he has never met, has no choice but to set off running after Tamar’s footsteps.

STREETS OF COLOR
Streets of Color, Calypso's version of the old Roman Bacchanalia, reflects the resources of multi-ethnic Trinidad and Tobago. It symbolizes the culture of a people who derive their energy and lifestyle from a pre-Lenten carnival called 'mas' (masquerade). The documentary features Peter Minshall, a designer who gained fame as an artistic director for the opening/closing ceremonies at three Olympic Games - by expounding on his controversial works in the mas. The dichotomy of today's festival pits his theme, 'Tapestry' - about the interconnection of man, his environment, his gods - against presentations by new-wave designers of minimalist (bikini-styled) costumes that appeal to neo-pagan celebrants. Minshall, a traditionalist, stands his ground, invokes satire, shoves a mirror in their faces, and says, 'That's you.'
